"Vetro" San Cesario 2000 (Kodachrome25) Claudio Zanirato | Limited ed. print 1 of 10
A Cumuli
A Cumuli emerges from a slow and recurring observation of the forms matter assumes when left to itself. Developed over nearly three decades through both analogue photography — including works shot on Kodachrome 25 — and digital imagery, the project moves across industrial territories, urban edges, beaches, construction sites and storage areas, constructing a reflection on the relationship between disorder, balance and landscape.
Within the piles photographed by Claudio Zanirato there is no true compositional intention. Form appears spontaneously, as a natural consequence of weight, gravity, time and accumulation. What initially seems accidental instead reveals an internal tension toward order, an implicit geometry emerging directly from matter itself.
The images observe these aggregates as silent and archetypal presences: temporary reliefs, involuntary architectures, minimal landscapes generated by anonymous and continuous processes. Sand, earth, debris and industrial materials lose their original function to become primary forms, suspended between construction and dissolution.
Throughout the series, the pile ceases to exist merely as deposit or waste and becomes a universal figure of contemporary accumulation: a physical trace of human labour, consumption, territorial transformation and the slow sedimentation of time.
A Cumuli unfolds as an archive of spontaneous forms, where photography does not simply document the landscape, but observes the moment in which matter — even in its apparent disorder — inevitably finds its own possibility of balance.
“For a long time I was drawn to every kind of pile. I photographed them everywhere. Today that attraction may have transformed into something else, something that continues to accumulate within memory.”
